Whether you jump, do dressage, go for endurance or are just a happy hacker – your horse first and foremost must be a sound, strong and happy athlete. To achieve that the horse must “go to school” – which means learn and perfect all the essential groundwork. Only then can he be expected to achieve more and perform better.
Justina's main goal is finding a balanced approach to each individual horse, without over-working or over-pressuring him, ensuring his health and safety. The objective is to progress forward depending on the horse's abilities, not age.
This is achieved through a combination of lunge, in-hand and ridden work which is aimed to teach the horse correct self-carriage, making him strong, yet supple and flexible.
Depending on the individual horse and his level of training Justina develops a training scheme which includes:
- Lunge work: combination of lunge exercises aimed at increasing flexibility, strength and self-carriage
- In-hand work: ranging from teaching of basic reactions to the whip and moving away from the pressure, activating the hindquarters, to introducing and developing of lateral movements (shoulder-in, half-passes, leg yielding, turns on the forehand) and working up to piaffe.
- Ridden work: combination of exercises to develop responsiveness, strength and flexibility. This includes lateral movements, simple and flying changes in canter, pole and cavaletti work, jumping up to around 110cm.
This varied training routine helps to develop the horse both physically and mentally, and prepares him for further progressing into different disciplines of riding.
Finally, it also ensures that neither horse nor rider are ever bored at training sessions!
